La importancia del hígado en tu cuerpo

The importance of the liver in your body

The liver, the largest internal organ in the human body, is a digestive organ located in the upper right side of your abdomen. It communicates with other digestive organs, receiving information about the level of available nutrients or the presence of threats such as prescription drugs, heavy metals, or toxic substances, like alcohol. As the main organ involved in detoxification, it is your liver that recognizes toxic substances and converts them into harmless material that can be released.

Today we know that without a healthy liver, it is impossible to have a properly functioning metabolism, healthy circulation, balanced hormones, clean blood, and strong digestion. Do you experience symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, bloating, and hormonal imbalances? These can all be signs that your liver is not functioning properly. In this case, it might be time for a liver cleanse and other liver-boosting lifestyle changes, such as adding supplements that support proper biochemical functioning of the liver.

Worldwide, liver disease is a major cause of illness. According to the consensus made by the Mexican Society of Gastroenterology and the Mexican Society of Hepatology, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects almost one third of the world's population. Mexico is one of the countries whose population has several risk factors for this disease and its prevalence could exceed 50%; that is why the medium-term outlook is very pessimistic if immediate actions are not taken to counteract what is already considered a national health problem.

Your liver is functioning properly if you have:

  • Good energy levels.
  • Skin without dark spots
  • Regular menstrual cycle with reduced PMS
  • Less infections and stronger immunity
  • Less digestive discomfort and more intestinal regularity.
  • Fresh breath and oral health
  • A positive mood and a sharp mind

How can liver function be assessed? If your doctor suspects you have a problem with your liver function, he or she may choose to perform a physical exam and a number of different tests, including: blood tests to check liver enzyme levels, a complete blood cell count, virus screening, blood clotting tests, tests to check bilirubin, albumin, and ammonia levels, ultrasound, and CT scan.

How to improve liver function:

  1. Avoid excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs
  2. Follow an anti-inflammatory diet
  3. Choose organic products
  4. Use supplements to support liver functions , such as:
    • N Acetylcysteine (NAC): important amino acid precursor of glutathione, which is essential for liver health, has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory functions.
    • Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): is a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize damaging free radicals and recharges and regenerates other liver-protective antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, glutathione, and CoQ10.
    • L-selenomethionine: used to create "glutathione peroxidase", an enzyme known for its high antioxidant capacity and which contributes to normal immune function and protection from cell damage.
    • Taurine: it is an amino acid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory action, in addition to its importance in glucose metabolism.
  5. Reduce stress and manage your emotions
  6. Balanced exercise
